Mighty Wanderers new coach Gerald Phiri has finally started his work, but general secretary Mike Butao refused to disclose targets set for the well-travelled mentor.

“We would rather not reveal the targets. And contrary to what you guys wrote, we have not signed Phiri on a two-year contract, but an open contract. We are optimistic, our performance will pick up,” Butao explained.

The open contract grants either party freedom to walk out, without financial strings attached, when not happy.

Phiri, who was pre-occupied with Malawi Under-20 assignments, takes over from Stuart Mbolembole with Charles Manda as deputy coach replacing Albert Mpinganjira.

He inherited the Nomads placed in unfamiliar position second from the bottom of the 15-member TNM Super League log table on just a point from six games.

Phiri was assistant coach then head coach for Big Bullets last season, and previously coached now defunct Blackpool and Sammy’s United.

He earlier told The Nation that poor attitude among players was contributing to the struggles. But Mbolembole blamed in-fighting, saying some people pretend to love the team, but are happy to see it lose.

“Members of the Wanderers family have to come together. My message is: ‘Don’t leave an enemy behind because he will rise and strike you,” Mbolembole said on Friday.
