Blantyre-based Mighty Wanderers yesterday survived Chikwawa United scare when they came from behind to beat the Shire Valley side 2-1 in a Carlsberg Cup quarter-final qualifying match at Balaka Stadium.

The Nomads were a goal down at the interval after Lanken Mwale put the TNM Super League rookies ahead in the 30th minute.

Mwale was put through by Bright Mphamba and there was a cathederal-hush silence in the predominantly blue and white arena.

However, the Nomads came into the second-half with renewed purpose forcing Chikwawa into rearguard action.

Substitute Victor Mpinganjira, who replaced Innocent Dzimbiri, equalised in the 68th minute, and the relief could be felt around the stadium.

Four minutes later, Cuthbert Sinetre claimed the winner after Mpinganjira had done the spade work on the right-flank. It was game over!

The Nomads will face Mafco in a quarter-final match at the same venue while Big Bullets date Azam Tigers at Kamuzu Stadium on Wednesday.

Wanderers coach Gerald Phiri said his charges under-rated their opponents in the first-half following their comfortable 3-0 win in a Super League first-round match.

His Chikwawa counterpart, Thom Mkorongo, blamed the loss on lack of concentration.

“We played too deep because we were afraid of conceding a goal and in the end we paid dearly,” said Mkorongo.
