NRB registers 69 941  people in 14 councils

The National Registration Bureau (NRB) says it has registered 69 941 new registrants, including 51 526 who will be 18 years or above on September 16 2025.

NRB Principal Secretary Mphatso Sambo said this in an interview on Wednesday following the conclusion of the supplementary national identity (ID) registration exercise which ran from December 29 2024 to January 4 2025 in 14 councils in the country.

Sambo said the NRB registered 74 127 out of whom 37 131 are males while 36 996 are females but 4 398 regis-trations were caught as duplicate records.

He said: “As of 7th January 2025, national ID numbers were generated and issued to 69 941 records.

“The duplicate records will not be issued with national ID numbers and have been subjected to further investi-gations.”

Sambo described the registration figures as a demonstration that the NRB is providing improved service to Malawians and that everyone has been given an oppor-tunity to register and access the national ID.

The supplementary civil registration was targeting 14 councils which were in Phase One of the Malawi Elec-toral Commission (MEC) voter registration process for the September 16 2025 General Election.

Commenting on the NRB figures, UTM Party publicity secretary Felix Njawala said they are not satisfied because the supplementary civil registration was affected by the same issues that hit previous registration exer-cises.

“It seems NRB has a capacity issue such that even if the supplementary exercise were to be redone, the result would be the same,” he said.
