NRWB proposes Water Users Association in KA

Northern Region Water Board (NRWB) has proposed to form Karonga Water Users Association to solve water concerns consumers are experiencing in the district.

This follows a meeting that was cancelled by Senior Chief Kalonga after  accusing the concerned citizens of not consulting the chiefs first about the meeting with the water board.

Munthali: Concerns noted

During Friday’s meeting, NRWB director of finance Francis Munthali said the formulation of the Water Users Association (WUA) would be the best solution to tackle the people’s concerns such as high water tariffs and customer categorisation, among others.

“We have noted the concerns. We will see how best we can address them. However, we feel instituting a WUA as a consultation structure is a good entry point to reach as many people as possible,” he said.

Munthali said the new water project coming to Karonga will start in January after the consultants  scrutinise the designs. The project is expected to increase water accessibility to people, he said.

Karonga district concerned citizens chairperson Joseph Chinula said he was happy to have reached a consensus with NRWB and people will wait for the response from the utility body.

The meeting was attended by members of Parliament for Karonga South, Central and North West as well as chiefs and government officials.
