Nsanje chief condemns vandalism of railway

Senior Chief Chimombo of Nsanje District has condemned vandalism of railway accessories, saying the vice is retrogressive.

His concern follows reports that some community members were vandalising the 72-kilometre (km) Marka-Bangula railway line which is under construction.

Speaking in an interview on Monday, the chief said the railway was a major development which can boost trade in the district.

“Many investors have acquired plots to construct different infrastructure ranging from lodges to hotels. This shows that once the railway line is fully operational, the district will regain its lost economic glory; hence, the need to desist from vandalising it,” said Chimombo.

Last week, Nsanje District Council spokesperson Robert Nayeja said they are sensitising

communities on the dangers of vandalising the railway.

He said: “We have engaged traditional leaders to sensitise their subjects to refrain from vandalising the railway to prevent rail accidents.

“We have also instituted a Railway Sensitisation Task Team. We are working with the Ministry of Transport and Public Works to ensure safety of the railway.”

In a separate interview, director of railway services Francis Magwede said they have put in place security guards to protect the railway infrastructure in the border district.

“At least 30km out of the 72km has been completed. As for the project’s completion date, we are still discussing the matter with our contractor as it is due for extension,” he said
