Ntchisi authorities hail GESD school project

Ntchisi education authorities have hailed the construction of a classroom block at Masangano Primary School, saying it will decongest classrooms and promote quality  education.

The project, in Senior Chief Kalumo in the district, is also aimed at helping to retain pupils in school and reduce dropout rate.

The school’s head teacher Andrew Kalikuni told Malawi News Agency on Tuesday that before the two-classroom block was constructed, some learners were using the nearby Masangano Community Based Care Centre (CBCC) for classes.

The two clasroom block has improved education standards

“We were inconveniencing learners at the CBCC every time we used their space and most of our learners were failing to concentrate due to noise from children there,” he said

Kalikuni said learners from his school occupied two rooms at the CBCC, forcing the children to be kept in one classroom.

The K40.2 million school block was constructed between December 2021 and April 2022, along with a donation of 120 desks, under the World Bank funded Governance to Enable Service Delivery (Gesd) project.

Ntchisi district senior inspector of schools Hammex Malithano said congestion of learners in classrooms has been a long-standing problem that has led to demotivation of both teachers and learners.

He said: “Construction of the classroom block has significantly mitigated the congestion problem and has resulted in improved attendance rate of learners and reduced dropout rate. It is our wish that donors of the Gesd project increase funding so that other similar developments may be realised.”

The new two classroom block, has a capacity of 60 learners each.
