Flashback: Ntopwa take on ATU Ladies in semi-finals

Donna’s Eggs Southern Region Women Football Tournament finals will take place tomorrow at the BAT Ground in Blantyre where Ntopwa Super Queens have promised to end Blantyre Zero’s dominance in the annual contest.

Zero have been the champions since the K1.2 million competition was introduced in 2010, but the Queens coach Thom Kazembe, whose outfit is in the finals for the first time, said they are set to break the record this weekend.

“We admit it will be extremely tough to beat the defending champions, but at present we have assembled a strong squad capable of bearing sweet fruit this weekend.

“It is not on for one team to be title holders all the time as if there are no other good teams in the region. It is now our time to rule women football in the Southern Region,” said Kazembe.

However, Zero’s coach/player Maggie Chombo-Sadiki said Ntopwa’s statement is mere rhetoric because the Donna’s Eggs title will always remain on their mantelpiece.

“We do not play football with our mouths. Therefore, Ntopwa’s sentiment that they will end our dominance is just a cheap talk. Let them come to the battlefield to see if they are really good enough to be called the champions,” she said.

Ntopwa went on to win the semi-finals 2-0 against ATU Ladies, who lost 1-2 to Zomba City Queens in the third-placed encounter at the BAT Ground last weekend.

Skippers FC won the title in the inaugural Donna’s Eggs Central Region Women Football Tournament last Saturday after beating DD Sunshine 3-2 in the finals in Lilongwe while Moyale Sisters did it in the North after thrashing CY Sisters 4-1 on the same day in Mzuzu.
