The Carlsberg Cup national phase kicks off today with six matches lined up in all the three regions.

After two back-to-back losses in the Super League, Be Forward Wanderers are hoping to turn the corner when they host Southern Region Football Association (SRFA) league side Max Bullets in a Carlsberg Cup match at Kalulu Stadium in Nchalo.Wanderers

Wanderers team manager Stevie Madeira yesterday said they have recovered from the losses to Big Bullets and Silver Strikers.

“It is always painful to lose the Blantyre derby, but we have to pick ourselves up and move on. We have worked on the psychological aspect of the players and they appear to have recovered,” said Madeira.

Max Bullets coach Aubrey Nankhuni warned the Nomads not to expect a stroll in the park.

Meanwhile, Silver Strikers Reserves who play in the Chipiku Central Region Football Association (CRFA) league, have said they are ready to cause an upset against Super League side Epac this afternoon at Silver Stadium in Lilongwe.

Silver Reserves coach Kingsley Saizi said it will be folly for Epac to underestimate his team.

“The fact that we have reached the national stage is enough motivation for the boys to progress further in the tournament. It will be folly for Epac to underrate our capabilities. We have self-belief now,” said Saizi during a training session on Tuesday.

However, Epac are not moved by the minnows’ tough talk.

“I don’t know where they are getting this confidence from, but they cannot stand the heat. If we were able to beat their seniors, what resistance can they offer,” challenged Epac stand in coach Abbas Makawa.

In other matches scheduled for this afternoon, Support Battalion host Mzuni at Civo Stadium in Lilongwe (noon), Dedza Young Soccer Stars engage Karonga United in Dedza, Changalume will take on Kamuzu Barracks in an all-soldiers affair in Zomba while Airborne Rangers will face Ndirande Icons at Civo Stadium.

The K30 million Carlsberg Cup national phase rolls into life this afternoon with two Super League sides—Airborne Rangers and Civo United—facing each other in a round of 16 qualifying match at Chitowe Stadium in Dwangwa.

Those that will proceed to the round of 16 are assured of K100 000.

It will be the first game for coach Henry Khembo in charge of Airborne following the firing of his ex-boss Thomas Maloya this week.

Civo’s coach Oscar Kaunda said while the odds are tipped in his team’s favour, they will approach the game with a lot of caution.

“In terms of status and strength, I think we are better and although Chitowe is their (Airborne) home ground, we know it better than them because we have played there many times before,” said Kaunda.

The Civo will look up to John ‘Kintu’ Lanjesi, Emmanuel Zoya, Nelson Kangunje and World Nkuliwa in defence, Gerald Nkungula and Davie Ng’ambi in midfield and Patrick Gunde upfront while Airbone’s key men include Dingiswayo Banda and Leonard Mgomezulu.

Two other Super League teams Blantyre United and Epac have tricky fixtures against lower league sides Zomba United and Kasungu Medicals respectively.

Blantyre United travel to Zomba and their veteran coach ‘Sir’ Alex Masanjala has predicted a tough encounter.

“We are finalising our preparations, our area of focus is in midfield so as to consolidate possession. We are anticipating a tough match because I know Zomba from my stint with Kabula United in the Premier Division, they are a strong side,” said Masanjala. He will bank his hopes on striker Anthony Banda.

On the match against Kasungu Medicals, Epac’s operations manager Roy Mdechi said: “It’s always difficult playing against small teams because they come to prove a point. We will feature young players so as to match the expected pace of the game, otherwise we are through with the preparations.”

Tomorrow, Chilumba Barracks will host Support Battalion at Mzuzu Stadium from while Ndirande Icons will take on Eagle Strikers at Kamuzu Stadium.

The winner of the competition will get K9 million, runner up will walk away with K4 million, losing semi-finalists will pocket K500 000 each while losing quarter-finalists will receive K300 000 each.
