Nundwe asks politicians to keep away from MDF

Outgoing Malawi Defence Force (MDF) Commander General Vincent Nundwe has appealed to politicians to refrain from interfering with military personnel.

He said this at Kamuzu Barracks in Lilongwe yesterday when handing over the Sword of Command to General Paul Valentino Phiri.

“We are here to achieve government objective, and not political objectives. These are two different things. Politicians, I appeal to you, please do not interfere or influence MDF personnel. I urge MDF officers to follow the Constitution and the Defence Act. Don’t let politicians use you because your reputation is at stake and you will be compromised,” he advised.

He also advised service members to uphold morals, notably to desist from engaging in homosexuality.

“God did not create John and James, but Adam and Eve. Let’s maintain the natural order, and not this practice where women sleep with women and men sleep with men. This is not natural,” he said.

In his acceptance speech, General Phiri promised to uphold the integrity of MDF and ensure the welfare of service members.

“I know the huge responsibility that comes with this office. But I promise to uphold the integrity of MDF and focus on our mission with confidence and resolve. Your welfare will be taken care of. I will work transparently, and open to dialogue to achieve our objective. I am also open to advice so that together we can achieve our objectives of protecting this country,” he said, before thanking Nundwe for his leadership and professionalism.

Minister of Defence Harry Mkandawire, Ministry of Defence Principal Secretary Erica Maganga and retired commander Generals Peter Namathanga, Ignacio Maulana, Griffin Spoon-Phiri and Henry Odilo were among VIP guests who witnessed the ceremony.

The day’s events included a military parade, general salute, the Sword of Command hand over and presentation of the commander medal and flag
