Nyamilandu’s condition stable

Football Association of Malawi president Walter Nyamilandu has said he is in stable condition after being involved in a fatal accident that claimed two lives including that of his fiancee Maria Inglis on Saturday morning.

The country’s football head, however said he was still at pains to come to terms with the death of his better half and that of a relation Effie Kadzakumanja.

Speaking from his residence in Chigumula Township on Sunday morning, Nyamilandu said: “I feel much better, but I am at pains to face the harsh reality that my wife is no more.

“Be as that may, I leave everything in the hands of Almighty God. It is by his grace that I survived,” said Nyamilandu.

He suffered bruises on his left hand during the accident.

Meanwhile, Nyamilandu has said the remains of his fiancee will be laid to rest at her home in Chitakale in Mulanje on Tuesday.

Her body was expected to be ferried from College of Medicine mortuary to Chigumula on Sunday.

Meanwhile, the sports fraternity led by Youth and Sports Minister Enoch Chihana paid their condolences to Nyamilandu and the bereaved family.

“Our thoughts are with the FAM president following the loss of his loved one and may the good Lord be his guide during this trying time,” said Chihana.

Super League of Malawi (Sulom) president Innocent Bottomani and Flames captain Peter Mponda also expressed their condolences.

Said Bottomani: “The news came as a great shock because we were expecting him to grace the Standard Bank Cup semifinal match between Mighty Wanderers and Big Bullets only to hear of the incident.”

On his part Mponda said: “Our thoughts are with the FAM president and we’ll be with him in prayers so that he recovers from the tragic loss.”

Mighty Wanderers and Big Bullets chairpersons George Chamangwana and Malinda Chinyama also conveyed condolences on behalf of their clubs.

Said Chinyama: “Walter has given it all during his tenure towards the development of the game and it is only proper that we should hold his hand during the tragic loss.”

Nyamilandu and five other family members were travelling to Lilongwe in his Nissan Pathfinder vehicle when the accident occurred at a place called Chitale between Phalula and Senzani along M1 Road.

According to Balaka Police publicist Joseph Sauka, the vehicle overturned a couple of times after Nyamilandu lost control in an attempt to avoid a Siku truck.

Two of Nyamilandu’s children who were also in the vehicle, suffered injuries.
