Chongwe: I do not know the Kafwafwa thing

Nyasa United lost 2-1 to Evirom FC at BAT Ground on Sunday, but talk was not only about their first Premier Division defeat in the Southern Region Football League (SRFL).

There was a fair share of attention on Nyasa’s sky-scrapping captain Martin Chongwe, who from a distance cuts an imposing figure like that of former Flames  long throw-ins specialist Clement Kafwafwa.

The 21—year-old also spins the throw-ins with telling ease, he is a defender and while he does not yet know his actual height, he is no doubt over 1.8 metres.

“I do not know about the Kafwafwa thing, but all those who know me call me Yaya. I am into Premier Division as it is not as involving otherwise, I concentrate on school,” said the Malawi College of Accountancy (MCA) procurement diploma student.

Chongwe is certain of pursuing studies, but does not know if he will make a career out of football, which is largely unfashionable in Malawi.

The big sweeper has all physical attributes of good defender, but he still has to perfect his tacking, heading and lacks aggression. Nonetheless, Nyasa player Chimango Munthali rates Chongwe highly.

“He is young, has the height and skill. His only weakness is his heading; that is why we play him alongside a senior. Given the right instructions, he can make it big,” Munthali explained at the ground.

Full Saturday SRFL results: Poly 2 White Eagles 2, Tigers Reserve 2 Surestream 1, Cobbe Barracks 5 Luchenza Stars 2, Machinga ADD 1 Max Bullets 3, Mangochi Police 2 Chanco 2, Prison United 2 BNC 1, Nchalo United 0 Bvumbwe Research 0, Green Hawks 1 Kabula 1 United.
