Former Flames coach Yasin Osman has suggested that Robert Ng’ambi should become Flames captain, but the South African-based midfielder has declined the armband.

“I feel more comfortable playing as an ordinary player. I do not want responsibility,” said Ng’ambi in a telephone interview.

Osman commented on Ng’ambi last week when giving meaning to the midfielder’s peak in form at Platinum Stars.

“If I were the coach, I would make him captain. He is now more dominant on the field of play and with due respect, more experienced than Joseph Kamwendo,” said the former FAM general secretary.

Football analyst Benjamin Nyirenda shared Osman’s opinion that Ng’ambi should be rewarded for his exemplary performance in a foreign land, where most Malawians struggle for game time.

But ex-Flames midfielder Sherry Msuku disagreed with the proposal, arguing that making Ng’ambi captain will pile pressure on him “because a captain carries the team”.

But Ng’ambi insisted that there are many better players capable who can wear the armband which former interim coach Tom Saintfiet stripped off Joseph Kamwendo. Interim captain James Sangala has since resigned.
