Oxfam in Malawi has distributed cholera prevention tools worth K43 million to 426 people from Senior Chief Katuli in Mangochi District.

The donation follows two latest cholera cases from Monkey-Bay in the district.

Speaking after presenting the items on Monday at M’dinde Primary School, Oxfam in Malawi country director Lingalireni Mihowa said the donation follows the Cholera Response Project they are running in the area with funding from Swedish International Development Agency.

She said: “Oxfam has mounted a cholera intervention in this area, especially at the two health centres of Katuli and Luwalika where we have courted health officials in the district to reach out to about 66 245 people with cholera prevention messages.

“Therefore, we are starting the distribution of non-food items for people to follow hygiene and sanitation at household level to reduce the risk of cholera.”

Mihowa also said through the same project they will rehabilitate 40 boreholes and upgrade water systems at Katuli Health Centre.

“This is an ambitious project that has a chunk of K500 million which seeks to promote good hygiene and sanitation practices among people, increase access to safe water supply and mitigate gender-based violence induced by poor water availability in the communities,” she explained.

Mangochi District Hospital medical officer Elizabeth Mwamphachi thanked Oxfam in Malawi for the support.

“The items will go a long way in preventing the communities from the risk of cholera,” she said.

The items included plastic pails, soap, chlorine and solar lamps.
