PAC starts meeting presidential hopefuls today

Quasi-religious body Public Affairs Committee (PAC) will today start meeting presidential candidates in the September 16 2025 General Election ahead of the signing of a peace declaration prior to elections.

PAC executive director Robert Phiri in an interview yesterday said first on the line-up is UTM presidential candidate Dalitso Kabambe at Sunbird Mount Soche in Blantyre this morning before meeting People’s Development Party (PDP) candidate Kondwani Nankhumwa in Mangochi in the evening.

He said PAC plans to meet all the 17 presidential candidates approved by Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) .

According to Phiri, PAC will, among others, present a draft peace declaration to be signed during national prayers set for September 8 2025 at Bingu International Conference Centre (Bicc) in Lilongwe.

“A peace declaration is a goodwill document which forms a basis for dialogue and mediation in case of political or electoral dispute. Hence, it is PAC’s desire that presidential candidates sign as was the case in 2014 and 2019 elections,” he said.

Phiri said this year’s ceremony will be unique because the signing of the peace declaration will be supported by solidarity statements from United Nations, African Union, MEC and Malawi Peace and Unity Commission.

In an interview last evening, Nankhumwa confirmed that he will attend the meeting, but could not give more details saying he wasn’t briefed on the agenda of the meeting.
