There was jubilation, standing ovation and disbelief at St Matthew Anglican Church in Blantyre recently when it was announced that the thanksgiving Paper Sunday had raised over K4.3 million (US$10 287).

This was a record collection on one Sunday and the disbelief came in because the money was realised from the usual congregants since there were no special invited guests apart from the guest preacher Peter Mbepula, who emphasised on the importance of offerings.

On this special occasion, Faith Mussa of the Desperate fame did not disappoint as the church danced to his songs while giving happily to God for the blessings received in 2013.

St Mathews Church has four home cells (milaga) and Chichiri won the trophy for giving the highest amount of K889 940 (US$2 129) while Chigumula was the most improved since it moved from K343 730 (US$822) last month to K827 590 (US$1 979).

“The total amount collected today is unbelievable. We have broken our own record and we have to give ourselves a round of applause,” said church warden Oswin Kasunda, before announcing the total collection of K4 345 310.

Pastor Mbepula said it was commendable that the congregation had taken it upon itself to build the new church, emphasising that this will ensure ownership of the project.

He encouraged the congregation to continue giving towards God’s work.
