People in Traditional Authority Wasambo in Karonga District have commended duty-bearers for initiating the construction of a market shelter at Chihepusha.

In an interview on Tuesday, Chihepusha Market chairperson Wilson Mwalwanda said the structure will promote trade in the area.

He said the market shelter will promote hygiene and sanitation in the wake of cholera outbreak.

“It is not good to display our merchandise, including foodstuffs, on the ground when cholera is spreading so fast. Therefore, the shelter will help traders to display their merchandise on clean benches,” said Mwalwanda.

Nyungwe area development committee chairperson Naomi Munthali said her office facilitated the construction of the shelter to provide a safe, secure and clean place for traders.

“Good market structures also motivate users to pay market fees, which contributes towards the development of the district,” she said.

Zgeba Ward councillor Isaac Kalambo, one of the duty-bearers who initiated the project, expressed satisfaction with its progress.

He said: “We wanted to give traders a conducive place to conduct their business.

“This is what we mean when we talk about development. I urge users to pay market fees so that we can continue to implement more similar projects in the area.”

Kalambo, who is also Karonga District Council chairperson, asked people not to vandalise the facility.
