Days after Malawi Congress Party (MCP) president Lazarous Chakwera called for the resignation of Minister of Finance Ken Lipenga and other officials over Capital Hill’s financial mess, Petra president Kamuzu Chibambo has also made similar calls.

Chibambo has also asked President Joyce Banda to bring the culprits to book and avoid shielding officials through a commission of inquiry.

He made the stand on Friday during a press briefing in Mzuzu. He said Petra was irked with the financial mismanagement at Capital Hill when millions of taxpayers are living in abject poverty.

Chibambo said as a civilised person, Lipenga should take responsibility of the cash looting, arguing he cannot go scot free with two financial scandals under his leadership.

“If a mere clerk can siphon K3 million (US$8, 264), it is a big crisis and we don’t know how much is at stake. Our country is on fire, someone has put this country on fire,” said Chibambo.

But Minister of Information and Civic Education Moses Kunkuyu said on Saturday it is the president’s wish to have the matter investigated without political interference.
