Police officer feared dead in Machinga

A police officer from Liwonde Police Post is feared dead after he was swept away by running water from Shire River at Liwonde Barrage in Machinga.

Eastern Region Police spokesperson Thomeck Nyaude confirmed the incident on Tuesday. He identified the officer as Sergeant Vasco Chilumpha.

Nyaude said the incident happened on Sunday morning when the officer was headed to the shores of Shire River to clean his combat boots.

Said Nyaude: “The officer was seen cleaning his combat boots close to Kamuzu Barrage but was witnessed being washed away by running water from Shire River by Mr Alton Manuel from a nearby village. We are still conducting a search along the shores of the river.”

Chilumpha comes from Masanjala Village, Traditional Authority Mpama in Chiradzulu.
