Police in Salima District in conjunction with the district council, has engaged bicycle and motorcycle taxi operators (kabaza) in crime prevention and road safety measures.

Speaking on Friday during a meeting with the kabaza operators, Salima Police Station Assistant Superintendent Paul Kuchawo asked the kabaza operators to be in the forefront assisting the police to fight crime.

“We have a core duty to protect life and property. We value your life and your motorcycles. Avoid operating your business during odd hours to avoid being robbed and killed,” he said.

Salima District Council director of administration Shupikai Nyirenda urged the kabaza operators to pay for their business licences.

“This would also help in fighting crime because if an operator is involved in criminal activities, they would be easily identified,” she said.

Salima Police Station traffic officer Sub-Inspector Patricia Mdala urged the kabaza operators to always follow road traffic regulations, which include travelling on the left-hand side of the road and observing road signs.

“You should always wear crash helmets while on the motorcycle, carry one passenger and wear reflective jackets,” she said.
