Police have admitted facing problems probing into what caused the fire that destroyed the Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) warehouse in Lilongwe three months ago.

Speaking in an interview on day, Inspector General (IG) of Police Lot Dzonzi said the case required “more complex” investigations.

“There are some investigations which are more complex than others and this is one of them. It has not been easy and it is not easy. Some leads that we established have reached a dead end,” Dzonzi said.

The IG could not specify when the police will wind up their investigations, but made an appeal to members of the public who have information to forward it to the police.

“We are still in the process of conducting investigations and, therefore, cannot say more. But we are appealing to the public to come forward with whatever information they have that can be of help to us,” he said.

Unknown men set alight the MEC warehouse and destroyed ballot boxes scheduled for a vote recount in the disputed parliamentary election results for Lilongwe City South East Constituency.

MEC declared Democratic Progressive Party’s (DPP) Bently Namasasu as winner of the parliamentary poll with 10 956 votes against Malawi Congress Party’s (MCP) Ulemu Msungama who amassed 10 854, a difference of 102 votes.

The botched ballot boxes were due for a hearing last week, two days before a High Court hearing, which followed after a failed recount due to an injunction restraining MEC from going ahead with the process.

  1. This inspector General should just resign and start his own charismatic church than waste any more tax payer’s money in form of his wages and other privileges that he enjoys on daily basis. .

What kind of information does he want from the general public that the people who were on the scene have failed to give?

There were 15 police officers guarding the warehouse, all of whom witnessed the arson attack but never tried to stop it from happening.

In addition to the 15 qualified police officers, it was reported that there were also 2 private guards, 3 MCP election representatives and others, who also witnessed the attack, so what specific information have the above would be reliable witnesses failed to give those investigating this straight forward case.

Why does our police never seem to have the courage to arrest culprits who are associated with the ruling party, when will our police liberate themselves from political interference? Silly Cowards!!
