Mangochi Central MP Clement Chiwaya on Tuesday lamented that Malawi’s former president late Bingu wa Mutharika died a sad man after politicians failed him in his bid to put things right for Malawi.
In what can be described as a late eulogy for the departed president, Chiwaya raised a number of questions on Mutharika’s type of leadership, his achievements, failures as well as his strengths and weaknesses in his eight-year-rule.
Added Chiwaya: “All this points to one thing, we politicians failed Bingu. He went to his grave a sad man, deserted by his own Cabinet before his body became cold. I mourn for Bingu who raised his finger in the face of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and told them that he will devalue the kwacha only if there were measures to cushion the effects.”
He went on: “What has the devaluation and floatation of the kwacha done to Malawi? I mourn the Bingu that swore to continue subsidy programmes when no one among the traditional donors liked it. For eight years, he ruled this country, he never went around distributing food. Maize was cheap.”
