The Public Private Partnership Commission (PPPC) says its infrastructure financing and partnership forum will provide an opportunity to explore how PPPs can draw on private capital and expertise to support the country’s sustainable infrastructure development.
PPPC chief executive officer Arthur Nanthuru said this in a statement ahead of the forum to be held in Lilongwe on September 17, set to showcase priority projects to potential investors aligned with Malawi 2063 (MW2063), the country’s long-term development plan that seeks to transform the economy to lower middle-income economy by 2030 and an upper middle-income by 2063.
He said the forum will present a compendium of projects and a pipeline of opportunities to government agencies, financial institutions, development finance bodies and the private sector.
Said Nanthuru: “A structured post-forum process will take promising discussions forward through bilateral meetings.
“The focus is on converting forum engagements into tangible PPP investment outcomes.”
The forum comes against the background of the United Nations indicating that funding constraints remain a major limitation to the country’s commitment to the infrastructure development.
In an interview yesterday, Scotland-based Malawian economist Velli Nyirongo observed that underfunding in infrastructure slows progress, weakens key systems and makes it harder for Malawi to move from ambition to real transformation outlined in MW2063.
“Limited and unreliable funding slows down the pace at which key projects can be carried out,” he said.
The forum, to be held under the theme ‘Mobilising private capital for sustainable infrastructure development’, , is expected to convene government agencies, institutional investors and development partners on financing requirements.
