Just a Coincidence

President’s portrait at the wrong place

Listen to this article

In Blantyre where I live, there is a stretch of land that forms some sort of a triangle or something like that. This piece of land is at Ginnery Corner between Masauko Chipembere (some still call it Kamuzu) Highway, Mahatma Gandhi Road (the road from Chipembere Highway at Ginnery Corner going down to Catholic Institute (CI) and Chipatala Avenue (the road from Mahatma Gandhi Road going to Group Hospital (Chipatala Chagulupu; aka Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital-Qech). If you still have not gotten the space I am talking about, I am talking about pamabulugama (on the bluegum trees), on which the MTL Ginnery Corner Customer Service Unit is. This is the space I am referring to. What about it then?
On this piece of land, there is large billboard on which the face of His Excellency the President of our Great Republic, Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika, Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of this country is displayed.
Let me just go to the point now. The billboard, so it appears, is sponsored by Teveta. The issue is about community technical colleges. As a champion of community technical colleges, the President’s portrait graces the billboard. But there is one problem. And this problem is that Teveta or whoever was contracted to do this job never cared to ask me.
Ladies and gentlemen, I was born in Blantyre at Qech. I have lived in Blantyre for most of my life. When we hear people talk about this and that Manyowe this, Bangwe that, Kameza this and that, Lunzu abcd and all those things, we just listen. Blantyre’s largest and filthiest black crows (nkhungubwe or nachikwangwala or khwangwala) live, breed and mess up the place where the billboard with the President’s face has been erected. Within a short time, the khwangwalas will do what they do best in those large blue gum trees. They defecate massively not caring whose face is on the billboard. Soon, we will start seeing white marks on the President’s face, his mouth, his eyes and his head. Is this the respect we want to show our Head of State?
Now, there are people who would want to “tarnish my good image” and will start thinking that I am blaspheming the President. No, I am not. Was it me who put up the billboard with the President’s face at a place where crows use as their ablution space? Was it me? Was it not Teveta which has done this? I am not a hero by pointing out this great travesty?
Now, you may be asking how could this oversight have been prevented? Well, you should have asked. Where is the best place to put up a President’s billboard? We could have told you. We found those blue gum trees and perhaps we will leave those blue gum trees. We found those crows perched in those trees and perhaps we will leave those crows in those trees. Those crows do not care about billboards and whose faces are on them. They will defile the billboard in no time and the President’s image will indeed be tarnished! 
