Press Trust gives flood victims K10m relief
Public charity Press Trust has come to the rescue of Nkhata Bay and Mzuzu residents who are rising from the devastating effects of torrential rains which killed seven people and displaced about 17 000 households in the Northern Region last month.
Press Trust board of trustees chairperson George Kayambo and fellow trustee Tony Kandiero presented 30 tonnes of maize grain, 600 bags of maize seed and 90 rolls of plastic sheeting worth about K10 million ($14 430) to the flood victims at Mpamba west of Nkhata Bay town.
The devastation caused in the shoreline district has largely gone unnoticed as the country focused on the worst hit settings in Karonga and Mzuzu, but figures from Nkhata Bay District Council show that about 3 600 households in traditional authorities (T/As)Timbiri and Nkumbira were affected.
T/A Timbiri thanked the Trust for the foodstuffs, saying the floods are not peculiar as the Limphasa River is inundated by many tributaries.
Equally enthused was Sanga Ward councillor Beauty Banda who thanked Press Trust for their indiscriminate interventions to promote the well-being of Malawians when it comes to agriculture, health and cultural sectors.
