Finals of the K8 million Puma Energy Malawi Open Lawn Tennis Championship are expected to be broadcast live on Malawi Broadcasting Corporation Television MBCtv between 9am and 2pm today.
The finals are scheduled to held at Blantyre Sports Club (BSC).
According to Lawn Tennis Association of Malawi’s (LTAM) president Francis Mwansa, Puma Energy has spent K2 million on the live screening of the annual event so that people should experience the excitement the sport brings.
At least 86 contestants, including 18 foreigners from Zambia, Zimbabwe, Kenya, Tanzania, Botswana and Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) started battle for the $2 000 (about K800 000) winner’s purse in each of the men and ladies’ singles categories on Thursday.
“This is a historic event every Malawian or other sports lovers around the world should not miss; hence, the decision to have a five-hour live broadcast of the men and ladies finals on MBCtv,” Mwansa said.
Nevertheless, Malawi’s hunt for men’s singles title suffered a blow on Thursday when James Matewere, the only Malawian, who reached the semi-final stage last year, lost 6-2, 3-6, 6-3 to Congolese champion of Katanga Province Saidi Tokya in the third-round on Thursday. n
