Rains affect 2 775 families in Kasungu

Stormy rains that have hit Kasungu since December 27 2025 have left a trail of destruction, affecting at least 2 775 households, damaging critical public infrastructure and washing away crops.

Kasungu district principal disaster risk management officer Shepherd Jere said on Saturday that the rains have displaced families in 17 traditional authorities (T/As), with hundreds of houses either completely or partially destroyed.

He said: “Out of the 2 775 affected households, 260 houses have been completely damaged while 2 515 houses have their walls partially destroyed.

“Although the impact is widespread, there has been no death recorded so far, but 10 people have been injured. The displaced families, estimated at about 90, are currently being accommodated by relatives and well-wishers.”

T/A Kaluluma has registered the highest number of affected households at 499, followed by T/A Chisinga with 456 families.

Public infrastructure has also not been spared as the rains have washed away Mpasadzi, Nkhamenya and Milenje bridges.

In addition, the World Bank-funded Sopani Dam in T/A Chisemphere has burst its banks, causing further flooding downstream.

Meanwhile, Kasungu Municipality legislator Noel Mkubwi (independent) has called for councils to have readily available resources to enable swift responses to disasters.

“We received reports and decided to see the situation for ourselves. In one case, a house collapsed on a woman who was injured and rushed to hospital. It’s a sad situation,” he said.

Kasungu Municipality Mayor Hasting Nyirongo echoed the call, saying over 100 houses in the municipality have collapsed so far from rainstorms
