Pagaja: We have written them

The country’s regional football leagues have given teams an ultimatum to pay affiliation fee balances or risk forfeiting points.

The Peter Mutharika Southern Region Football League (SRFL) has warned teams that they risk losing points at the start of the second round whereas their Central Region counterparts Chipiku (CRFL) have set this Sunday as the cut-off point.

SRFL general secretary George Pagaja and his CRFL counterpart Bernard Chiwiruwiru-Harawa claimed that teams owe them in excess of K400 000 (about $1 000) and K700 000 (about $1 750) respectively.

“We do not want a repeat of last year’s scenario where we had referees boycotting final matches due to unpaid dues.

“This time around, we will be strict and any team that fails to pay will have to face the consequences and that was communicated before the start of the league. We have written them reminders,” said Pagaja.

SRFL teams are required to pay K120 000 (about $400) affiliation fees, but according to Pagaja, very few have paid in full.

The CRFL GS said: “The requirement is that teams are supposed to pay 75 percent affiliation fee upfront and the balance before the start of the second-round.

“We have given them enough grace period and any team that fails to settle the balance by this coming Sunday will lose points. This also applies to teams that have not paid fines imposed on them.”

Chiwiruwiru-Harawa said over 40 teams are yet to pay the fees in full. He said the bulk of the fees go towards officiation and administrative costs.

In the CRFL, Premier Division teams pay K80 000 (about $200) each while in Division One and Two, teams pay K65 000 (about $165) and K45 000 (about $112 each respectively.
