Reliving the old times
Experiences evoke both good and bad memories.
This seems true about the recently established Old Skul Reunion entertainment platform which is rekindling memories of old times in terms of lifestyle, music, dressing and the general showbiz culture.
During the two shows that the Old Skul Reunion crew staged earlier in Blantyre and Lilongwe on Saturday, the platform has attempted to refresh people’s memories in many different ways beyond music.
You remember the days when people spent hours in telephone booths to make calls? And the days the platform shoes were the epitome of fashion excellence?

On Saturday, at Casa Milano in Area 10, within the patronage one could see the image of Macy Gray’s unique Afro hair touch, you could appreciate the rock n roll elegance of the likes of Lenny Kravitz, the ambiguity of the rap duo Kris Kross and the NBA popular jerseys of Kobe Bryant and Michael Jordan were all on show.
The venue was transformed to suit the event’s theme. Probably the spot which caught almost everyone’s interest was the photo booth.
The space was adorned with different articles of old such as the popular Tintin comic cartoons, dial phones, gramophones, vynals and funny wooden covered television sets.
The patrons took turns to have their pictures taken under such old ambience throughout the event.
On the music side, Ephraim ‘DJ E’ Nyirenda, DJ Robin, DJ Dude the Smasher and Phillip Kalindawalo alias Phyl Touch explored every music genre from every past generation. Everyone had something to dance to.
The only blemish came towards the end when the community around the venue complained of the high-pinched sound and asked the owners of the place to stop the event.
Phyl Touch’s set was abruptly stopped to the dismay of the patrons who looked like they wanted the party to go on forever.
Lilongwe-based media consultant Taonga Botolo said the event delivered a chilled atmosphere and it was no surprise that people turned up in large numbers to witness the event.
“The venue was packed to capacity, which caused some discomfort for some patrons. Overall, the DJs lived up to their billing, taking the audience down memory lane with great performances of old school songs,” he said.
One of the team members, DJ E said their plan is to expand the platform to eventually get everyone on board according to their liking.
“We are pleased that the platform has received a good reception and with the help of our corporate partners we believe we can reach as many people as possible,” said DJ E.t
HS Winehouse Beverages and Hospitality sponsored the event under its taxing hailing App innovation TaxiDo and its board director Rachel Mijiga said their long-term plan is to provide a convenient way to get people safely to places where they are having fun and back to their homes.
“We are looking at a situation where people gather like that and have fun without having worries of how they safely drive back to their homes especially in urban areas,” she said.
