There was joy in Traditional Authority Kyungu in Karonga District when a well-wisher Anderson Kiswigho Mwakyelu repaired a borehole to supply water to Nkungwe Primary School and its surrounding areas.
The school’s head teacher Clement Kayuni said the potable water will help improve sanitation and hygiene and reduce long distances learners were enduring in search of water.
He said: “Learners eat porridge under the school-feeding programme and community members were fetching water from swampy areas for cooking the porridge.
“With the functional borehole, the women will now use clean water for preparing porridge.”
Kayuni also thanked Mwakyelu for donating K1 million for rehabilitating a classroom and teacher’s house.

“We have a makeshift classroom whose floor is dusty. We will buy cement for the maintenance of this classroom. The renovated classroom will motivate learners to work hard in class,” he said.
Mkungwe Primary School Management Committee treasurer Dickson Kifungwe said the school, which opened its doors in 1996, is in a dilapidated form.
On his part, Mwakyelu said being a son of the soil, he was compelled to repair the borehole after noting water challenges at the school and how women were struggling to access clean water for household chores.
“This is an individual effort from a bonafide citizen of this area to support government’s development agenda because healthy people contribute significantly to the country’s socio-economic development,” he said.
Mwakyelu also committed to constructing three toilets to improve sanitation and hygiene at Kasikizi Primary School in the area.
Community member Mbuya Mwambungu commended Mwakyelu for the kind gesture and encouraged other sons and daughters from doing well elsewhere to invest back in the community.
“The area is in need of several social amenities. So, if we had many Mwakyelus, the area could have developed because government is overwhelmed with other equally important things,” he said
