Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) regional governor for the North the Reverend Christopher Ngwira has resigned from the party and joined Malawi’s ruling People’s Party (PP).

The Mzimba Hora legislator, who confirmed his resignation in an interview on Wednesday, said he served the resignation letter to DPP on Monday.

DPP acting secretary general Dr Allan Chiyembekeza said on Wednesday he was yet to go through the resignation letter.

“It is with deep regret that I write to you to inform you of my decision to leave the party with effect from 31st December 2012. The reason for the decision is personal.

“This was a very difficult and painful decision for me to make for a number reasons,” reads part of the letter sourced by The Nation.

Ngwira said he has resigned from DPP following pressure from his constituents who, he said, asked him to join PP soon after it took over government in April because they wanted him to work with the government.
