Salima District Council hails climate change interventions

Salima District Council has expressed satisfaction with the progress and impact of interventions that seek to build community resilience against climate change shocks in the district.

The interventions, which include the construction of an evacuation centre, installation of a solar-powered water supply system for irrigation and drilling boreholes, are part of efforts to build community resilience to climate change shocks and enhance people’s livelihoods.

World Relief Malawi is implementing the interventions under the Climate Just Communities project in the district.

From Monday to yesterday, the council held a two-day review in Mponela, Dowa to evaluate the project’s progress and its sustainability.

Speaking during the review meeting, Salima district director of natural resources and environment Adam Jason commended the project and emphasised the need for continued collaboration.

He said: “The interventions are timely and relevant to the district’s development agenda, especially in mitigating the impact of climate change, providing safe water and irrigation farming.

“We are particularly impressed with the evacuation centre, which will serve as a safe haven for communities during floods and the solar-powered water supply system for irrigation.”

Jason also highlighted the importance of continuous engagement between council officials and World Relief Malawi.

“As a council, we are open to offering technical support and guidance to ensure the interventions’ long-term sustainability. We urge the implementing partners to maintain regular communication with our environmental and planning departments,” he said.

On her part, World Relief Malawi country director Matilda Matitha also expressed satisfaction with the project’s progress.

“We have seen improved access to water, food production through irrigation and a stronger sense of community preparedness in the face of climate-related disasters,” she said.

Matitha also acknowledged the role local stakeholders play, especially the district council in ensuring the project’s smooth implementation
