Scorchers fundraiser hits K1bn target
The send off dinner which Football Association of Malawi (FAM) held on Friday at Bingu International Convention Centre in Lilongwe to raise funds for the Scorchers’ participation at 2026 Wafcon finals has hit the K1 billion target.
Speaking after the event, FAM president Fleetwood Haiya confirmed they had raised what they had targetted.

He said: “Our target was K1 billion and I can confirm that we should be able to reach the target this evening.
“We are remaining with a few millions. I believe by the end of the fundraising, we should be able to reach the target.”
Haiya also thanked government and the corporate world for their contributions.
He said: “We are grateful to government for directing that we get K600 million. Looking at the patronage this evening, the hall is almost full. We had four platinum partners who have contributed K20 million each. We have seen cabinet ministers making donations of about K10 million and K5 million.
“We are also grateful that the First Lady Madam Gertrude Mutharika donated K10 million, through the purchase of the Scorchers jersey” he said.
Haiya, who himself donated K9 million through the purchase of the jersey, assured all the partners that they will ensure transparency and accountability.
He also thanked National Bank of Bank of Malawi for contributing $30 000 to help in solving the Forex crisis.
On his part, Minister of Youth, Sports and Culture Alfred Gangata assured FAM of government’s commitment to supporting sports, including football in the country.
He said: “Government through President Peter Mutharika is committed to supporting sports development in the country. As a ministry we will always strive to support the Scorchers so that they continue doing well both on the continental and global level.
“The Scorchers exploits on the continent have cannot be overemphasised. They have caused upsets, beating best teams to reach the the final stage of the Wafcon. They need support. This is an important opportunity for the corporate world to come in and assist . I therefore commend National Bank of Malawi for contributing towards the Scorchers.”
