Scorchers replica jerseys have become scarce, with the price almost doubling, as analysts describe the team’s success at the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (Wafcon) as a boost to marketing, tourism and merchandise trade.
This comes at a time the Malawi women’s national football team has qualified for the 2027 Women’s World Cup and is expected to play in the Wafcon final on Sunday against Cameroon.
A spot check at Into-Sport shops, a sportswear chain across the country, discovered that the Scorchers jerseys are out of stock.
In an interview, Into-Sport director Aniz Yusuf confirmed that demand for Scorchers jerseys has skyrocketed.
He said: “There’s high demand for scorchers jerseys but unfortunately stock is finished. Customers are supper excited wanting to buy the jerseys, unfortunately the stock is finished.
“I believe if the team happens to grab the cup definitely the demand will increase because everybody will want to support a winning team.”
Another Lilongwe-based retailer Chimwemwe Kapasule said the Scorchers replica jerseys had run out of stock.
In an interview, Football Association of Malawi marketing manager said the Scorchers’ historic qualification for the Wafcon final has strengthened the team’s marketability .
“The public response is also translating into increased interest in Scorchers merchandise, particularly replicas. They were sold out just after our win against Nigeria,” he said.
