The Malawi National Women’s Football Team was voted the People’s Brand of the Year at the 2023 Institute of Marketing in Malawi (IMM) Marketers Excellence Awards presented in Mangochi on Saturday evening.

The recognition comes after the Scorchers’ first-ever Cosafa Women’s Championship triumph in Johannesburg, South Africa a fortnight ago where they won all their five matches.

In an interview yesterday, Football Association of Malawi (FAM) president Walter Nyamilandu said they were thrilled with the award.

He said: “What a turnaround of reputation and image for the Scorchers. This is a double celebration for us. It’s great to see that the Scorchers have become a household name.

“It’s also encouraging that women’s football is growing in popularity in Malawi. This shows that the brand equity of Scorchers has tremendous value to both the public and private sector.”

National Women’s Football Association chairperson Adellaide Migogo described the recognitionas a big feat.

She said: “We are excited with the award. It speaks volumes of the girls’ achievement and it will motivate them to work even harder.

“To be recognised at such a big event is no mean achievement and we really appreciate.”

Scorchers striker Temwa Chawinga, who was the team’s stand-in captain at the regional showpiece, said they were humbled by the award.

“On behalf of my colleagues, I would like to thank Institute of Marketing in Malawi for recognising our success and it will spur us to work even harder,” she said.

During the awards, FAM commercial and marketing director Limbani Matola was named Best Sales Personality of the Year.

He was instrumental in securing new partnerships in football and driving revenue for FAM’s business units.
