DPP shadow MP for Mangochi Municipality, Rodrick Clement Chiwaya, recently met with over 100 people with disabilities to explore ways of assisting them.
The district has one of the highest numbers of disabled individuals, and many were previously supported by his late brother, Clement Chiwaya.
During the meeting, Chiwaya identified Thoko Banda, who urgently needed a wheelchair, and donated his late brother’s.
“Seeing Thoko struggle was heartbreaking. I had to act,” he said.
He appealed to well-wishers to donate unused wheelchairs.
“One wheelchair can restore dignity and freedom,” he urged.
One of the disabled people who attended the meeting Yusuf Jali praised his efforts.
“Most politicians make promises. Chiwaya is taking action,” he said.
