Silver win Premiership first round

Silver Strikers women have wrapped up the National Bank of Malawi (NBM) Women’s Premiership first round unbeaten with 27 points from nine-straight wins.

The Lilongwe-based outfit thrashed Mzuzu-based MK Academy 7-0 at Silver Stadium in Lilongwe to become the only team yet to taste defeat in the 10-team league so far.

The Central Bankers are seven points ahead of fellow capital city outfits second-placed Ascent Soccer Academy and third -positioned MDF Lioness who are 12 points behind.

On Sunday, player of the match Deborah Henry banged in four goals as Silver Ladies tormented the visiting MK Academy.

In an interview, Strikes by Wezzie Mvula and Chikondi Gondwe as well as an own-goal by Tiyamike Banda summed up Silver Ladies’ emphatic victory.

Silver Ladies coach Andrew ‘Aluki’ Chikhosi said their first-round success is a result of a highly-motivated team.

He said: “Our sponsor, the Reserve Bank of Malawi and the technical panel motivated the players throughout the first round and they gave their all.

“As a team, we also gave ourselves a target of not dropping a single point and it worked. We will do our best to maintain this perfect record in the second round.”

The other four matches last weekend ended in stalemates. On Saturday, Blantyre-based Mighty Wanderers Queens and MDF Lioness settled for a two-all draw while on Sunday, there were 1-1 results in clashes involving Civil Service Women of Lilongwe and FCB Nyasa Bullets Women of Blantyre, Topik Academy of Mzuzu versus Moyale Sisters and Ascent against Kukoma Ntopwa Women of Blantyre.

Bullets Women and Wanderers have finished the first round tied on 14 points. They are fourth and fifth, respectively, due to a goal difference.

Ntopwa with 13 points, Civil with 10, Moyale with five and MK Academy with four points take sixth to ninth positions, respectively. Topik anchor the table with two points.

Meanwhile, Football Association of Malawi competitions and communications director Gomezgani Zakazaka in an interview said they are impressed with the first round of the inaugural women’s football national league.
