Smuggled products flood Mchinji, LL

Smuggled beer Chibuku Super is said to be flooding the markets in Mchinji, Lilongwe and Kasungu districts.

Chibuku Products Limited operations manager Barter Chunga said the smuggled product has also been spotted in some parts of Nambuma in Lilongwe.

He said this on Friday when his company and Malawi Revenue Authority (MRA), seized 12 000 litres of Chibuku Super worth K5 million.

People destroying the smuggled products

“The smuggled Chibuku is affecting markets in Mchinji, Lilongwe City and Kasungu. We have seen the same product being sold in markets in the rural areas like Nambuma,” Chunga said.

He, therefore, said this year alone, they twice destroyed the smuggled Chibuku in the Central Region this year alone.

MRA officials said the smuggled products were confiscated in Mchinji and Lilongwe.

In an interview on Friday in Lilongwe at MRA Lilongwe offices during the destruction of the confiscated products, customs office manager Patricia Gondwe said the products were smuggled into the country through uncharted routes.

“Malawi Customs and Exercise Act under Section 145 says if any goods have committed customs offence they are liable to forfeiture,” Gondwe said.
