Songwe get top-flight baptism

FCB Nyasa Bullets showed no mercy in the demolition of rookies Songwe Border United with a 7-0 thumping in a predominantly one-sided TNM Super League affair at Kamuzu Stadium in Blantyre on Sunday.

The victory saw Bullets returning to the top of the table after being displaced by Kamuzu Barracks of Lilongwe, albeit temporarily on Saturday.

The People’s Team has nine points from three straight wins.

It took  the hosts only seven minutes to claim the opener through their Nigerian striker Babatunde Adepoju from a penalty awarded after Chikumbutso Salima was fouled in the box.

Wongani Lungu doubled Bullets’ lead in the 32nd minute when he capitalised on a defensive error by Francis Mwakabango.

Lungu claimed a brace and Bullets’ third barely two minutes later from the rebound following Chikumbutso Salima’s spade work from the right flank.

The 17-time champions led 3-0 at half-time.

Salima then got on the score sheet two minutes after recess after being set up by Yamikani Mologeni to make it 4-0.

With the visitors from Karonga dancing to Bullets’ tune, defender Zebron Mwaseghe scored an own goal in the 52nd minute.

Despite their dominance, Bullets coach appeared unsatisfied and kept on charging up and down the touchline, urging them to score more.

Two minutes later, Maxwell Gastin Phodo made it half a dozen after being put through by Salima.

On the other hand, Hassan Kajoke claimed the seventh and last goal for Bullets in the 89th minute.

Songwe Border coach Enock Mhone said they started well, but his charges were put off by the penalty which gave Bullets the lead.

“We were up against a big team and most of our players are playing in the Super League for the first time and they are still learning the ropes,” he said.

This was the third straight loss for table-anchors Songwe, who are yet to earn their first point just like old timers Mighty Tigers of Blantyre and Civil Service United of Lilongwe.

Bullets gaffer Peter Mponda said he was happy that his team played according to their game plan.

“We have not yet reached where we want to be, but we are happy,” he said.

In another match, Creck Sporting Club’s hunt for their first win continued after playing out a goalless draw against Blue Eagles in an all-Lilongwe affair.
