Speaking during the handover ceremony, SOS Children’s Village Blantyre family strengthen programmes coordinator Alexander Nguwo expressed that while their primary focus is addressing the needs of children who have lost parental care or are at risk of losing it, some of the beneficiaries have recently endured the devastating impact of Cyclone Freddy, which has left them grappling with the destruction of their livelihoods.

He said: “This donation aims to alleviate the impact of the disaster while simultaneously providing hope for the future, with the goal of stabilizing and fostering sustainable livelihoods.”

On his part, Department of Disaster Management Affairs (DODMA) disaster risk management officer Cosmas Mangoka said government is still collaborating with various organizations to provide assistance in the form of both food and non-food items to those individuals affected by the heavy rains.

“We are committed to our best efforts in providing assistance to those experiencing hunger, a challenge that has affected many parts of the country. In Blantyre district alone, we are aiming to support over 34,000 households through our response program,” he said.

On his part, one of the survivors, Martha Maganizo said the donated items will greatly assist her family in rebuilding their lives.
