Genetrix Hockey Club has been relieved of K255 000 (about $637) balance in respect of hiring the Sports Council bus on their recent trip to the Phoenix Assurance Hockey Championships in Lusaka, Zambia.

The club paid a similar amount to the council and they were supposed to pay the balance before the end of the year.

However, in a letter to Genetrix, council executive secretary George Jana said they have decided to waive that balance in recognition of the club’s achievement at the Lusaka competition where the team won the tournament.

Jana said they were encouraged by the team’s success as it proves that Malawi has the potential to do well and cement her mark on the continent and beyond.

“As a recognition of your achievement, the council has hereby decided to waive the outstanding bill on you of its bus which you used to travel to Zambia for the tournament,” said Jana.

In the letter, Jana advised the council’s accounts department to amend its books and records accordingly.

Genetrix Hockey Club coach Geofrey Biya said they are thankful to the council for the kind gesture and they are encouraged to do well in future international competitions.

At the Zambian five-team event, Genetrix Hockey Club men’s team was a guest participant and the event accorded the team a second international appearance after participating in the 2010 African Club Championships in Lusaka, where they finished last on position 11.
