The Southern Region Football Committee (SRFC) has warned that no one will be allowed to organise a sports trophy without the committee’s blessings.

SRFC chairperson Raphael Humba said this on Sunday in Balaka during finals of the K1 million Gertrude Maseko trophy.

Humba said as the country is approaching election campaign period, many political aspirants will introduce sports trophies in the areas they want to contest, just to buy votes.

“Whoever wants to start any football competition should follow procedures by going through the regional and district football committees,” said Humba.

He said his committee would like to avoid sponsors duping participating teams.

Humba said when sponsors come through the committee, it will be easy to take them to task in the event that they fail to give out promised prizes.

He commended Maseko for giving out prizes to the winners of her football and netball trophies.

Maseko, who is the Balaka North parliamentarian on the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) ticket, pledged to raise the stakes in other contests to start soon.

During the finals, Mbera United beat their rivals Mbera Stars 7-6 on post-match penalties and received K100 000 (about $250) and a trophy. Stars got K50 000. Gowa United and Tembo FC received K30 000 and K25 000 for coming third and fourth respectively.

In netball, Iwisa emerged champions. They received K80 000 and a trophy whereas losing finalists Bwaila received K40 000. Chimalizeni and Mbera Queens received K25 000 and K20 000 for coming third and fourth respectively.
