Stop selling teachers lies—Committee
Parliament has rebuked Ministry of Education, Science and Technology for peddling what it termed as ‘lies’ which have given false hopes and frustrate professional teachers for years on end.
Parliamentary Committee on Education chairperson Elias Chakwera yesterday led members of his committee at a meeting in Lilongwe in condemning the lack of ‘morals’ from ministry officials from who appeared before the committee.
The officials were led by Principal Secretary for Education Justin Saidi.
Among others, the members pointed out the plight of bachelor of education (Primary) graduates from Domasi College of Education (DCE) and bachelors of education graduates from Chancellor College who petitioned the committee earlier on delays to employ and promote them, respectively.
Said Chakwera: “These graduates have legitimate expectations, and that is why they are asking for their promotion and employment of the teachers.
“Why train them when you know you have no vacancies. Morality demands that what is done to someone should not be done to you. Imagine if it were your child or neighbour.
In his response, the PS explained that those who graduated in 2016 were not eligible to promotion interview because by that time they had not completed their programme.
“These are part of 73 shortlisted candidates who did not make it when an opportunity for promotion was availed to them and are now petitioning to be promoted on a silver platter,” said Saidi.
