Super League of Malawi (Sulom) says it is investigating the violence that erupted during the TNM Super League match between Silver Strikers and Dedza Dynamos on Monday.

The match was disrupted for some minutes following a confrontation between some Silver supporters and Dedza security officer Ernest Gamphani.

Some Silver supporters allegedly pounced on Gamphani who invaded the pitch purportedly to remove some substances placed at his team’s goal.

Banda: Sulom condemns acts of hooliganism

The incident happened in full view of stewards and police who merely watched as the fight ensued, according to a footage of the match.

Sulom general secretary Williams Banda said they were investigating the matter and will take action against the culprits.

He said: “Sulom strongly condemns acts of hooliganism and violence that were witnessed at Silver Stadium on Monday afternoon during a Super League fixture between Silver Strikers and Dedza Dynamos. Sulom is currently awaiting reports from all relevant role players.

“Kindly note that Sulom will act in accordance with the relevant football regulations and reports duly submitted to the body.

“Hooliganism and thuggery of this nature has no place in football and acts of violence perpetrated by individuals witnessed yesterday afternoon [Monday] cannot be tolerated.”

However, Silver marketing and communication officer David Daniel Dauda said the Silver supporters wanted to remove the Dedza official from the pitch.

He said: “Some section of fans went to remove a Dedza supporter who came from the dressing room area to spill some substances on the goal area, but to the contrary he started beating up the people who wanted him out of the pitch and that is how the fracas started as some retaliated.”

But Dedza general secretary Mabvuto Mugode said in an interview that Gamphani was doing his job.

The two sides are tied at eight points from five games but Dedza are on position seven since they have scored a better  goal aggregate.
