Lilongwe Magistrate’s Court has ordered Chinese national Lu Ke, popularly known as Susu, to leave Malawi within seven days from July 20 2023 after finding him guilty of procuring children for entertainment purposes.

Principal resident magistrate Roderick Michongwe sentenced Susu to 12 months imprisonment on his own plea of guilty.

However, since Susu has been on remand for one year, the court ordered him to leave the country within seven days.

Said Michongwe: “He is to leave the country within seven days and should never return.”

During the session, Ministry of Justice senior assistant chief State advocate Dzikondianthu Malunda informed the court that Susu has paid K16 million as compensation to the victims and for social responsibility in the areas where the children were exploited.

In an interview later, Malunda hailed the ruling, saying the State will see to it that Lu Ke leaves the country.

“There will be an officer to supervise his departure,” he said.

Malunda added that government will also ensure that the victims receive their compensation and that part of the money supports schools for the benefit of the community.

Susu, which means uncle in Chinese, was arrested in Zambia in July last year and extradited to Malawi following a BBC Africa Eye’s investigation which exposed his production of videos of children in Njewa Village on the outskirts of Lilongwe City.

In the videos, which could reportedly be sold at around $70 in China, according to the BBC documentary, Susu would organise the children and ask them to repeat after him in Chinese racially derogatory words that the children did not understand.

The State charged him with 14 counts, including procurement of children for use of entertainment, trafficking in children, illegal use of the Internet and harmful social practices. He has been on remand at Maula Prison in Lilongwe since his arrest
