Tabitha chases Golden Boot

France-based Malawian women’s football icon Tabitha Chawinga on Sunday took her French Women’s First Division goal tally to 10 as her club Paris Saint Germain (PSG) played out a one-all draw against leaders Lyon.

The Scorchers captain is now a goal shy of leading scorer Lyon’s Ada Hegeberg as the chase for the golden boot gathered momentum.

Tabitha captured in action

In a match monitored on PSG  TV, Tabitha’s sheer quality shone once again when she broke free of the Lyon defence to score stylishly with the outside of her right foot in a one-on-one situation with the goalkeeper in the 66th minute.

And just when it appeared the Parisians would bag full points, there was to be a sting in the tail when defender Elisa De Almeda scored an own goal at the dot of full-time to share the spoils.

In an interview yesterday, Tabitha, who is on a season-long loan from Chinese Superleague side Wuhan Jiangda, said they were unfortunate not to win the match.

She said: “We were so close to getting a crucial win in the race for the title, but such things happen.

“In such big, top-of-the-table clashes, anything can happen.”

On narrowing the gap with the leading scorer, Tabitha said: “What matters is that as a striker, it is my duty to score goals and I need to try and score more.”

PSG are second in the 12-team league with 33 points from 14 matches, 10 points behind Lyon, who have played a game in hand.
