Tabitha nominated for Africa award

Malawi’s women’s football star Tabitha Chawinga has been nominated for the World African Woman in Sport Award by South Africa-based Gsport4girls.

Gsport4girls is an online initiative committed to daily coverage of women’s sport to bridge the gap with men’s sport.

Tabitha: The recognition alone is an honour

The China-based Scorchers captain will compete with Kenyan middle and long-distance athlete Faith Kipyego and South Africa Fifa referee Akhoma Makalima for the accolade.

In a message posted on the organisation’s website, www.gs.sport. co.za, says Tabitha has been nominated for her exploits in Italy where she spent a season on loan at Serie A Women’s side Inter Milan from China’s Wuhan Jianghan.

Reads the statement: “Tabitha Chawinga, the Malawian footballer, made history as the first African player to secure the 2023 Italian Serie A Women’s Golden Boot Award.

“Her remarkable achievement, driven by her 23 goals for Inter Milan Woman in the 2022/2023 season, showcases her prowess and dedication to the sport.”

Writing on her Facebook Page, she appealed to people to vote for her saying: “Vote for Tabitha Chawinga as your favorite African Woman In Sport Award at www.gsport.co.za./voting ends until 31st August.

In an interview yesterday, the 26-year-old said she was excited with the nomination.

She said: “The recognition alone is an honour to me and I am humbled. It shows that the organisation appreciates what I achieved in Italy and I do not take it for granted.”

Among others, the categories include Brand SA Para Sport Star, gsport Emerging Athlete of the Year, SuperSport School Sports Star of the Year, Team of the Year, Coach of the Year, Telkom Woman of the Year, Global Woman in Sport.
