Malawian women’s football star Tabitha Chawinga says opening her scoring account at Paris Saint Germain (PSG) women’s side on Friday night, was a “wonderful feeling”.

The Scorchers captain netted the lone goal for the Parisians against AS Saint Etienne at Stade Some Jaoquet in a French Women’s First Division League.

Chawinga: I needed that goal to calm the nerves

It was the 27-year-old second appearance after making her debut in a 0-1 loss to Olympique Lyonnais five days earlier following her loan deal from Chinese Women’s top-flight league outfit Wuhan Jiangda.

“The game was good. I needed that goal to calm the nerves. At least, some pressure off now,” she said in an interview on Friday.

Tabitha scored in the sixth minute after Lieke Martens broke down on the left and found her with a pass that oozed class to calmly connect from close range. No, panic, no fuss. Job done.

PSG are third with six points from three matches, three points behind leaders Paris FC.

The Parisians, who won their opening league match 3-0 against Bordeaux a fortnight ago, now turn their attention to their trip to England for Tuesday’s Uefa Women’s Champions League tie against Manchester United.

In 2021, Wuhan Jiangda loaned Tabitha to Inter Milan Women.

In October 2022, she was named the best African player in Europe for the month of September by international cable sports channel Espn, barely a week after winning the Italian Serie A Women’s Player of the Month for September.

The Scorchers captain then won the Serie A Femminile League Golden Boot, the first African player to do so, with 23 goals.
