Tabitha’s goal sends Lyon top
France-based Malawi female football star Tabitha Chawinga broke the hearts of her former team Paris Saint Germain (PSG) Feminin when she scored the lone goal for Olympique Lyonnais in a French Women’s First Division League match on Sunday evening.
The win saw Lyon displacing the Parisians from the top of the 12-team French women’s top-flight table.
It also handed PSG their first league defeat of the season.
The champions now have 16 points from six matches, having won five and drawn once. They are a point ahead of PSG.
Lyon, who revel in being the most successful women’s team in France and in the world, now stand proudly as the only unbeaten side in the league.
In match highlights monitored on PSG TV, the Scorchers captain scored the priceless goal in the 27th minute with her trademark left foot from a swift counter-attack.
In an interview yesterday, Tabitha said scoring against her former team “was just part of the game”.
She said: “Of course, I didn’t celebrate much and I felt for them, but I had to score and make a difference. After all, it had been a while since I last scored, so it came as a relief.”
This was the second league goal for the Scorchers skipper since joining Lyon at the start of the season.
Last season, she starred for PSG where she won the golden boot and was named Player of the Season during her loan stint from Chinese side Wuhan Jiangda. Tabitha’s compatriot Rose Kabzere also scored on her debut for Montpellier in a 7-0 thumping of Guingamp the previous day. She also provided an assist in the sixth goal after coming in as a substitute.
