Tambulasi appointed MRA chief, Mbeta new AG

Private practice lawyer Felix Tambulasi has been appointed as Malawi Revenue Authority (MRA) commissioner general, taking over from Dan Daka who has served for slightly over a year.

Chief Secretary to the Government Justin Saidi confirmed in an interview yesterday that Tambulasi is the new head of the public tax collection agency.

“I can confirm that we have a new commissioner general and he is Mr. Felix Tambulasi,” he said.

However, Saidi could not indicate where Daka will be redeployed. Daka was appointed in August 2024 during the Malawi Congress Party administration replacing John Biziwick.

Tambulasi’s appointment comes after government earlier this month dissolved all boards of parastatal organisations and State-owned enterprises.

Saidi earlier indicated that in the absence of boards, their functions revert to the Office of the President and Cabinet.

The MRA Act mandates the commission’s board to appoint the commissioner general and the Minister of Finance to approve the same.

Tambulasi did not pick up when contacted yesterday.

However, he is not new to the authority as he has previously worked for MRA as director of legal services and company secretary.

Meanwhile, governance expert Willy Kambwandira has urged Tambulasi to utilise his institutional knowledge to crack down on revenue leakages, curb corruption and improve efficiency at the tax collecting body.

“We expect him to bring professionalism, transparency and innovations to MRA operations. It is also our expectation that the appointing authority will expedite the appointment of the board at MRA to ensure strong oversight,” he said.

The MRA is an agency of the government of Malawi responsible for assessment, collection and accounting for tax revenues.

Meanwhile, President Peter Mutharika yesterday appointed private practice lawyer Frank Mbeta as Attorney General, and fellow lawyer Fostino Maele as Director of Public Prosecutions.

Saidi announced the appointments in a statement last evening.

He also announced that Mutharika has appointed Gertrude Hiwa as Solicitor General while Times Group journalist Cathy Maulidi has been appointed as presidential press secretary while Timothy Khoviwa has been appointed as chief adviser on religious affairs while Henry Mukhuna is now chief adviser on manifesto implementation.

In a related development, government has appointed Harold Msusa as Principal Secretary for the Ministry of Information.
