Tay Grin’s new single Tcha released on Saturday is already making an impact, especially the music video which has instantly caught the attention of music lovers.

The video, directed by Tay Grin, with a team of over 10 people that include Sonyezo, Annie Feza, Bucci and Patrick Ngoleka, is set in what appears to be a forest at night. The artist, dressed in elaborate royal outfit, is then joined by some traditional dancers displaying their dancing artistry with ease.

Tay Grin: It is time we told our stories authentically

In an interview, Tay Grin said he decided to invest heavily into the production of the video because it is high time Malawian artists started creating local art that has global appeal.

“It is time we told our stories authentically produced at the highest level. The entire production team of this video are Malawians. It is a great honour to come together to create this masterpiece,” he said.

Tay Grin said the song is a continuation of his artistic efforts to create an authentic Malawian sound that will breakthrough globally.

He said he and Sonyezo have such great chemistry and the combined passion to create music that represents Malawian culture.

He said: “I call the music Nyau music and this particular beat is a blend of manganje and the Nyau drums. My music always has live instruments which gives it a very authentic feel. Sonyezo produced the beat and we had several sessions with the drummers and lead guitarists to get the right melodies. It was quite a challenging process, but worth every minute.”

Writing on Twitter, Sonyezo celebrated the new song saying cultural beats is the way to go.

“We can never go wrong being us. This is manganje,” he said.

On his part, artist Bucci who designed Tay Grin’s costumes in collaboration with Entwan, said they are trying to introduce tasteful fashion in music videos. “We are trying to introduce an elaborate type of dressing in music videos and not just appearing wearing anyhow. I am happy with the styling of the outfits that we did,” he said.
